To gain a BSc in Computer Science (Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence), you complete modules to a value of 360 credits. If you’ve received an offer to study with us, we’ll invite you to one of our offer holder days, which take place between February and April. These open days have a strong department focus and give you the chance to really explore student life here, even if you’ve visited us before.

It’s based on the Office for Artificial Intelligence’s National AI Strategy recommendations for AI Masters courses. You’ll learn not just core AI-techniques, but how to place them within a business context so as to show their value. Please apply for only one Computer Science degree as we are only able to consider one application to this subject area. We invest in your future beyond the end of your degree and studying at the University of Edinburgh will lay the foundations for your future success. Philosophy of Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence

The robotics module was something I found out whilst researching universities and realised having that in addition to the AI opens up a lot more career pathways in the future. This module advances your knowledge of micro-controllers and programming and covers interfacing to a robot chassis/robotic six-axis arm. Apart from learning the principles of general AI you will also become experienced in implementing Chat Bot applications. If you meet the academic requirements but require additional support to take your language skills to the required level, you may be able to attend one of our pre-sessional English courses. Students who successfully complete the pre-sessional course can progress onto their chosen degree course without retaking an IELTS or equivalent. All three artificial intelligence fundamental modules will be assessed by combining coursework (60%) and exams (40%).

We will consider students who have completed GAOKAO for entry to our Undergraduate Programmes. Our undergraduate programmes are fully accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS). The School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science carries out world-class research – and applies it to real-world problems. Being taught by someone who is changing the world with their ideas makes for exciting lectures, and helps you to stay ahead of the curve in your field. 99 per cent of our research is classed as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (REF 2021). Professor Poesio focuses on computational linguistics/natural language processing, and in particular anaphora resolution/coreference.

Minimum entry requirement

You can access study skills support through your tutor, our subject librarians, and our online academic skills centre. Seminars and workshops enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups. Timetabled learning may fall between 9am and 9pm depending on your courses and tutorials. Going to university can offer you a series of once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. As part of your course, you could study abroad with one of our short-term Global Experience programmes.

The courses fully meet the requirements for Chartered Information Technology Professional and partially meet the requirements for Chartered Engineer. You will be given a copy of our marking criteria which provides guidance on how your work is assessed. Your work will be marked in a timely manner and you will receive regular feedback.

Foundation Year students

That’s why from the beginning of your time with us you will be assigned a Personal Tutor who will remain with you throughout your studies and support your academic progress, developing your transferable skills and any welfare issues. Applicants studying A levels or the International Baccalaureate Diploma, will be eligible for direct entry if you meet your chosen programme’s entry requirements. We will consider students who have taken A Level examinations and the International Baccalaureate (IB) for entrance to undergraduate programmes.

This module is designed to provide students across the university with access to knowledge, skill development and training in the field of entrepreneurship with a special emphasis on developing a business plan in order to exploit identified opportunities. The module complements students’ final year projects in Computing, Law, Biosciences, Electronics, Multimedia, and Drama etc. This module aims to strengthen the foundational programming-in-the-small abilities of students via a strong, practical, problem solving focus.

Our Real Time Lab has a suite of 20, 6 axis programmable robotic arms, autonomous vehicles, micro-controllers, motors, sensors and state-of-the-art design suites for embedded software programming and electronic design. Candidates are normally required to hold five GCSE subjects at grade C/4 or above, including Mathematics and English Language. Our new master’s in Artificial Intelligence has been developed with input from UK and international organisations to equip you with the cutting-edge practical skills sought by employers across a range of sectors. Our staff have written internationally acclaimed textbooks for learning programming, which have been translated into eight ai engineer degree languages and are used worldwide. Each module has two lectures and one to two hours of classes, usually making 14 formal contact hours per week and eight hours of ‘homework club’ drop-in sessions each term. In this module you learn what is meant by neural networks and how to explain the mathematical equations that underlie them. You also build neural networks using state of the art simulation technology and apply these networks to the solution of problems.

In all the student spends 450 hours throughout the academic year, reporting to their academic tutor, and in the case of company projects, to a company mentor. Artificial intelligence (AI) involves designing and making computer systems that can perform human tasks, like taking food orders. When studying an AI degree at uni, you’ll learn theory and develop practical skills to help you become a specialist in the fast-paced world of computing and AI. You’ll cover different areas of computer and data science, including topics like modelling, cyber security and data structures, learning how they drive innovation and change. During the degree, you may also get practical experience in the form of industry-focused projects, using specialist facilities, as well as a possible placement in industry.

• Drawing on research in machine learning and deep learning, our course provides you with a systematic understanding of AI techniques that will enable you to develop and apply AI solutions in a range of settings.
